The idea for a contest to design a ship's patch was suggested by ETN2 Dennis Solo of OcDet 2 in late 1964.  See the bottom right of page 3 of the December 1964 OcDet 2 Newspaper "Seasons Greetings".  Fiercely contested by some fine Navy artists, the contest was ultimately won by ETSN Chuck Scobie.
